Ohio State was able to make it into the Big Ten Tournament with a 12-12 conference record, beating both of Northwestern and Rutgers two out of three times in the last two weekends of the regular season.
In the Buckeyes first game in the tournament, they dominated No. 2 Nebraska, needing just seven innings to beat them 15-2.
The scoring started in the second inning when second baseman Joseph Mershon hit a solo home run to take a lead that the Buckeyes wouldn’t relinquish.
The fourth inning was a big one for Ohio State, scoring eight runs to take an 11-0 lead over the Cornhuskers. Every Buckeye who was in the starting lineup ended up with at least one hit in the game, finishing with 15 as a team.
Southpaw Landon Beidelschies started the game for the Buckeyes and joked after the win that he wanted his offense to stop scoring so his arm didn’t get too cold.
“Obviously you want them to score, but not that much. It got pretty ridiculous there,” Beidelschies joked on the Big Ten Network broadcast after the win. “I politely asked them to stop but they wouldn’t. I guess that’s a good problem to have.”
While after the long break Beidelschies did give up a home run in the bottom of the inning, that ended up being the only run he gave up in five innings of work, letting up two hits and one walk with eight strikeouts. Chase Herrell and Zach Brown each came in for an inning of relief work while the Buckeyes cruised to the 15-2 win.
Ohio State’s next game will be against No. 3 Indiana on Thursday at 3 p.m. They didn’t match up against the Hoosiers in the regular season. The Buckeyes are searching for an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament with a Big Ten tournament win, which is likely their only way to get in at this point. The tournament is double elimination, so the Buckeyes have put themselves into good position, needing three more wins if they don’t lose a game in the tournament.
