Baseball: Three Ohio State Players Receive All-Big Ten Honors
Three Ohio State baseball players earned All-Big Ten honors a few hours prior to their first conference tournament game since 2019.
Sophomore shortstop Henry Kaczmar, sophomore right- handed reliever Blaine Wynk and freshman pitcher Gavin DeVooght each were recognized when the Big Ten came out with its All-conference team on Tuesday.
Kaczmar earned All-Big Ten second team honors while Wynk made the third team and DeVooght was named to the Big Ten freshman team.
Kaczmar, who was on the Big Ten freshman team last season, improved upon his performance from his first season with the Buckeyes, hitting .318 with eight doubles, two triples and seven home runs while starting each of the Buckeyes 52 games at shortstop this season. Defensively he has a .952 fielding percentage and was named to the Brooks Wallace Award watch list last month.
Wynk was a reliable arm for the Buckeyes out of the bullpen. He made 20 appearances and pitched 36 1/3 innings to a 2.97 ERA, which was the best on the Ohio State pitching staff, and struck out 36 batters.
DeVooght began the season as a reliever, but was ramped up to be the Buckeyes’ Sunday starter after doing well in his relief role. He ended up starting seven games and pitching 10 out of the bullpen, and pitching to a 4.22 ERA. He struck out 36 batters in 42 2/3 innings pitched.
Each school also had a sportsmanship award winner, which was given to senior outfielder Mitchell Okuley. The team captain had a career-best .314 batting average with 58 hits, 16 doubles and four home runs for 41 RBI.
The Buckeyes match up against Nebraska at 9 p.m. in Omaha for their first game of the Big Ten tournament on Tuesday.
