Caleb Downs Is A Consensus All-American, Five Buckeyes Honored As AP All-Americans

Ohio State had five players recognized as AP All-Americans on Monday, with Caleb Downs the only Buckeye being named to the first team.

Seth McLaughlin, Donovan Jackson and Jeremiah Smith were named second-team All-Americans and Lathan Ranson was recognized as a third-teamer.

Downs’ selection as first-team AP All-American makes it so that he is now a consensus All-American, making the list for the Walter Camp Football Foundation and American Football Coaches Association already.

The sophomore finished his first season with Ohio State with 62 tackles, 6½ for loss, an interception and three pass breakups, also returning a punt for a touchdown – a first for the Buckeyes in 10 years. That was enough to make him a finalist for both the Jim Thorpe Award and the Bednarik Award.

Still yet to be announced are the FWAA and Sporting News All-American teams, so if he earns first team honors for both of those, he will officially be a unanimous All-American.
