Ohio State sophomore forward Cotie McMahon, coming off her career-high 33 points in the Buckeyes’ 100-92 win over Iowa on Sunday, has won a bevy of national awards recognizing his impressive performance against the Hawkeyes.
McMahon has been named AP National Player of the Week, Big Ten Player of the Week and Naismith Trophy Player of the Week after finishing with her career high on 12-of-23 shooting – including 9 of 14 at the free-throw line – along with 12 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal in 41 minutes, including 21 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.
For this season, McMahon is averaging 13.9 points and 5.5 rebounds on 45.5 percent shooting. While she had a slow stretch around Christmas, McMahon has responded with double-digit scoring outings in each of her last five games, including just her fourth career double-double against Iowa.
“I think, in particular, Cotie was excellent around the rim, finishing, getting fouled,” head coach Kevin McGuff said. “Going back prior to Christmas, she was in a little bit of a funk there, she wasn’t playing really well. She has practiced extremely hard and extremely well every single day since we came out of the Christmas break. I’m really happy to see her apply that to the game today. She was just so effective around the rim and you could see her physicality and aggression really coming through and it was really fun to watch.”
