Devin Brown Still OSU’s Backup QB Despite Plans To Enter Portal

Ohio State redshirt sophomore quarterback Devin Brown is still the Buckeyes’ backup quarterback heading into their first-round College Football Playoff matchup against Tennessee, despite declaring his intention to enter the transfer portal, head coach Ryan Day announced during his press conference on Monday.

“Julian (Sayin) is getting a lot of reps in there, but Devin right now is the backup quarterback,” Day said during his weekly press conference at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, “but Julian is right there, and he needs to continue to push in that area, and you never know how this thing is all going to shake out. There’s a lot of football ahead of us and so we’ll need all those guys. I give Devin credit he wants to finish this thing out the right way, but he also wants to see what options are available for his future. I think it’s not an easy thing for him to do, but I give him credit for wanting to finish this thing out the right way.”

Brown, who declared his intent to enter the transfer portal on Dec. 8, has received limited playing time this season behind starting quarterback Will Howard, but he has thrown for 108 yards and a touchdown while completing 10-of-19 passes. Brown has done enough this season to stay ahead of up-and-coming former five-star freshman quarterback Julian Sayin.

Despite the limited game reps Brown has received, as it stands now is one injury to Howard away from being thrust into a significant role as the team’s quarterback.

Day said of the other three players who intend to enter the transfer portal, junior wide receiver Kojo Antwi will remain on the roster, while senior wide receiver Jayden Ballard and junior linebacker Gabe Powers will not be on the roster.
