Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said Wednesday that quarterback Devin Brown will be unavailable for the Buckeyes’ Spring Game on Saturday following a procedure on a finger on his throwing hand.
“The other four quarterbacks will play,” Day said. “Really important for Kyle (McCord) and Tristan (Gebbia) to get out there and compete.”
Brown has been locked in a battle for the starting quarterback job alongside McCord throughout the spring, and the spring game would have offered an opportunity to see the two on an equal stage in front of fans at Ohio Stadium, but it will instead be a showcase for the remaining signal callers available.
“I think there’s been really good quarterback play this spring,” Day said. “There’s been a lot of ups and downs along the way, and so we’ll see how Saturday goes and then take a look at the spring and go from there.
“It would be nice to have (the quarterback battle) be black and white. I can’t sit here and tell you it is right now,” he continued. “They’ve both done really good things. but there are things they both have to improve on. If they were sitting right here they’d both tell you the same thing. There’s no games or no agenda here. It’s two guys competing. One day one guy has the upper hand (and) the other day the other guy might have the upper hand.”
While Brown will not be available on Saturday, Day said he does not expect the procedure to sideline Brown for long, expecting the quarterback to throw again soon, and Day said it has no bearing on the quarterback battle.
“Devin’s been practicing the majority of the spring,” Day said. “He’ll miss a couple of practices and be right back at it, so it’s more of a setback than anything else.”
