Fourth-Ranked Field Hockey Goes 2-0 Across Weekend

No. 4 Ohio State picked up back-to-back wins over the weekend, beating No. 17 Penn State 4-0 Friday and Kent State 3-0 on Sunday, giving the Buckeyes their fifth and sixth shutouts of the season, respectively.

Neither the Buckeyes nor the Nittany Lions (7-6, 1-3 Big Ten) tallied a score in the first half on Friday. The teams combined for five first half shots and three first half penalty corners, but two saves from Penn State freshman goaltender Aby Deverka kept the game scoreless.

Ohio State graduate forward Makenna Webster broke the stalemate 1:18 into the second half, scoring on a helper from junior forward Linsday Roberts.

About two minutes of game time later, senior forward Hallie Brost lifted Ohio State to a 2-0 lead and junior forward Olivia Wallace tallied her first goal of the season at 37:19 to make it 3-0. The three goals for Ohio State in the third frame matched their season-high for goals in a quarter, a feat the Buckeyes have now done four times this campaign.

Webster rounded on the scoring with a penalty shot at 58:54 in the fourth quarter, her team-high 12th goal of the season.

Saturday witnessed a more methodical Ohio State offensive attack, as the Buckeyes scored a goal in three out of the four quarters en route to the victory over Kent State (3-10, 2-2 MAC).

Wallace added goal No. 2 for her weekend at 6:32 in the opening quarter and Brost also tallied her second goal in as many games at 19:20 in the second frame.

Freshman forward Sienna Golden added the final goal of the day for Ohio State (11-1, 2-1 Big Ten) at 53:08 in the fourth quarter.

In an impressive defensive showing, the Buckeyes outshot the Golden Flashes 17-1 across the entire game while holding Kent State shotless until the final quarter.

Next up, Ohio State will look to add more wins to a memorable season with another two-game weekend, taking on No. 8 Maryland in College Park, Md. on Friday and Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J. Saturday.

No. 8 Women’s Soccer Splits Weekend

No. 8 Ohio State went .500 over the weekend, falling 3-2 to Minnesota in Columbus Thursday before beating Purdue 4-2 in West Lafayette, Ind., on Sunday.

The Buckeyes fell behind early against Minnesota, allowing two first-half Golden Gopher goals from senior forward Khyah Harper at 17:36 and 35:37, respectively.

Minnesota sophomore midfielder Kate Childers made it a 3-0 lead at 56:20. At 60:24, graduate midfielder Jelena Zbiljic own-goaled for Minnesota, after a through pass by Ohio State junior midfielder Ella Giannola found the left leg of Zbiljic 6 yards from the goal.

About four minutes of game time later, senior forward Kailyn Dudukovich brought the Buckeyes within one with her 13th goal of the year. However, the effort was too little, too late as Minnesota (9-3-3, 3-3-2 Big Ten) held Ohio State scoreless the remainder of the game.

Ohio State flipped the script Sunday against Purdue, tallying three first half goals of its own from sophomore defender Ava Bramblett, Dudukovich and then Dudukovich again.

Senior midfielder Abigail Roy gave Purdue (6-7-2, 2-5-1 Big Ten) hope at 44:12, bringing the Boilermakers within one in the closing moments of the first half, but the Buckeyes (10-2-3, 5-1-2 Big Ten) shut Purdue out in the second half and added an insurance goal from Giannola at 52:34.

Dudukovich’s three-goal weekend brought her total goals to 15 on the season and she now sits tied with Tiffany Cameron as the all-time scoring leader at Ohio State with 40 career goals.

Ohio State will take a trip to the West Coast to face USC on Thursday and UCLA Sunday in the final two away games of its season.

No. 2 Men’s Soccer Beat Washington in Columbus, Drop First Game To UCLA in Los Angeles

No. 2 Ohio State posted an even week, winning 2-0 over Washington on Oct. 7 before losing its first match of the season 2-1 to UCLA on Friday, the first loss of the season for the Buckeyes and the end of the best start in program history.

The Buckeyes’ tilt against Big Ten newcomer Washington witnessed arguably the most physical game of the season for Ohio State, with a combined 28 fouls between the two teams as Washington committed 11 in the first half alone.

The game opened with 67 minutes of scoreless action before graduate midfielder David Wrona lifted Ohio State to a 1-0 lead, putting the game on ice against a struggling Washington offense. Senior midfielder Michael Adedokun added a sigh of relief for the Buckeyes in the 85th minute, his sixth goal in 2024.

Ohio State (9-1-2, 4-1-1 Big Ten) once again used a strong first half defense to sit tied at zero apiece in the first half against the Bruins before finding itself up 1-0 on junior midfielder Ashton Bilow’s first goal of the season at 69.07

UCLA would break the hearts of Ohio State faithful, though, scoring back-to-back goals in the 69th and 70th minute from graduate midfielder Edrey Caseres and redshirt senior Jose Contell, respectively.

The Buckeyes outshot the Bruins (5-3-4, 2-2-2 Big Ten) 13-7 in the second half and 18-11 across the full 90 minutes, but found no offensive success in their first loss of 2024.

Ohio State will look to avenge the loss on Saturday against Wisconsin in Madison, Wis.

Women’s Volleyball Beats Northwestern, Falls To Michigan In Four Sets

Ohio State women’s volleyball swept Northwestern in three sets Thursday before a 3-1 loss to bitter rival Michigan on Sunday, marking the Buckeyes fifth loss in the previous six matches.

Northwestern (3-11, 1-5 Big Ten) led early in every set, leads that did not serve as mainstays throughout each set as the Buckeyes were able to dispose of the Wildcats 25-23, 25-16 and 26-24 in straight sets.

Graduate outsider hitter Emily Londot led the Buckeyes with 15 kills while freshman Olivia Hasbrook had a team-high 12 digs.

The four-set loss to Michigan (14-3, 4-2 Big Ten) — played in front of a program-record crowd of 8,844 at Value City Arena — marked the fifth such loss for Ohio State this season, as the Buckeyes fell 26-24, 25-23 and 25-21 in the first, second and fourth sets, respectively.

The lone set win for the Buckeyes (8-8, 1-5 Big Ten) came in the third set, a 25-20 decision where Ohio State led the entire set.

The Buckeyes will look to get above .500 against Penn State in Columbus on Friday.

Fourth-Ranked Women’s Ice Hockey Pick Up Five Points Against Minnesota

The No. 4/5-ranked Ohio State women’s ice hockey team beat Minnesota 4-3 Friday and skated to a 1-1 tie with a shootout win on Saturday, giving the Buckeyes five points on the weekend.

Ohio State (5-2-1, 3-2-1 WCHA) never trailed Friday but it wasn’t an easy win, as sophomore forward Joy Dunne sent in a goal at 3:28 in the opening frame before Minnesota redshirt senior Abbey Murphy notched the equalizer at 5:04.

Ohio State sophomore forward Jocelyn Amos had a near-buzzer beater to end the first period, scoring her at 19:27.2 to give the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. Graduate forward Kiara Zanon added a power-play goal to make it 3-1 at 15:23 in the second period.

Golden Gopher sophomore forward Emma Kreisz gave Minnesota life at 2:16 in the final period with a goal but graduate forward and captain Jenna Buglioni tallied Ohio State’s second power-play goal of the day to put the game on ice.

Graduate netminder Amanda Thiele saved 24 shots in the winning effort.

Buckeye freshman forward Jordyn Petrie started off the scoring on Saturday, before the game saw nearly 29 minutes of scoreless action on the ice.

Minnesota junior forward Josefin Bouveng tied things up early in the third period at 3:54 as both teams failed to get ahead in the final 16 minutes of play.

Amos won the shootout for Ohio State, marking the first tie for the Buckeyes since a 4-4 draw against the Golden Gophers on Oct. 29, 2022 – also a shootout win for Ohio State.

Next up, Ohio State will face another team from the Land of a Thousand Lakes. This time around its St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, Minn., on Friday and Saturday.
