Olympic Recap: Field Hockey Takes Down Michigan For First Time Since 2011
After dropping a game to No. 4 Louisville 2-1, the No. 17 Ohio State field hockey team has won three straight to bring their record to 8-1. On Sept. 15 they toppled No. 8 Michigan, something they have not been able to accomplish in 12 years, the last time coming in September 2011.
They came out of the gates firing in that game with senior forward Makenna Webster scoring unassisted just 38 seconds in the game to start what was a 4-0 run that lasted into the third period of the game. It was her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Freshman Brenna Bough – who isn’t far behind that mark with six – added two goals of her own, one at the end of the first period and one to start off the scoring in the second half. Sophomore forward Zella Bailey and graduate midfielder Julie Rodijk also contributed goals of their own.
“First quarter, you could feel the energy, but our defense was quick to pass to offense,” head coach Jarred Martin said. “As much as I liked that part of it, to see that for four quarters – I thought that was great. You know there is going to be some response from that opponent. I was happy for the start, but also to see that the whole game.”
Webster would go on to add another goal to her season total – which currently sits at 10 – in a 2-1 overtime win against Michigan State on Sunday. It was the first goal of the game for either team and it didn’t come until early in the fourth quarter, but the Spartans responded quickly.
Bailey would find the back of the net for the game-winner after traversing half of the field with possession and fighting her way into the circle on her own, her third goal of the year.
Men’s Golf Sets Program Records In First Weekend
It was a solid first weekend for the Buckeyes in Scottsdale, Ariz. at Maribel Country Club where they were able to place fourth of 15 teams in the three-day competition. Their final mark of 37-under 815 was the best an Ohio State men’s golf team has scored. Auburn won the event at 56-under par.
All five of the golfers that participated managed to be even or under par. Their second day total of 267 was also a program record for a single day score.
Graduate Neal Shipley led the group with a final mark of 12-under par, which was enough to tie for eighth individually at the event. Senior Maxwell Moldovan was right behind him at 11-under, followed by senior Adam Wallin at 8-under, redshirt freshman Tyler Sabo at 1-under, and fifth-year Patrick Schmucking at even par.
The next tournament they play in will be the Hamptons Invitational which will be in East Hamptons, N.Y. at Maidstone Club on Oct. 2 and Oct. 3.
Women’s Volleyball Struggles Continue
After starting the season with three straight wins, the restructured roster of transfers and freshmen the Buckeyes put together over the offseason has had a tough stretch of six straight losses. All six of those games have been to teams ranked in the top 25.
No. 11 Georgia Tech started that streak when they came to Columbus for two matches and beat the Buckeyes in four sets back-to-back nights. Next for OSU was a west coast trip to play No. 5 Stanford, who swept them, and No. 6 Oregon, who got the best of them 3-1.
A trip to Texas was next, and a chance to avenge their regional final loss from last season to now No. 6-ranked Texas, who jumped Oregon in the polls since the Buckeyes played them. Texas won that match 3-1, and the next day No. 18 Baylor beat them 3-2.
Through the rough patch, returning senior Emily Londot has still been shining with at least 10 kills in every game, getting up to 23 kills and 14 digs against Baylor. It was her fourth double-double through nine games this season.
