Former Purdue transfer and first-year Ohio State tight end Max Klare had his black stripe removed after Ohio State’s eighth spring practice on Monday, joining redshirt freshman cornerback Miles Lockhart as the second player in the Spring to lose his black stripe.
“Tight end room, (tight ends coach Keenan Nelson), (executive director for football relations Tim Hinton), (assistant tight ends coach Wendy Laurent), all the tight ends, I appreciate y’all, go bucks!” Klare said in a video posted to the Ohio State Football Twitter account.
Klare, a redshirt junior, is coming off of a career-best year with the Boilermakers last season. The Cincinnati native hauled in 51 passes for 685 receiving yards and four touchdowns on the way to earning a third-team All-Big Ten honor.
So far, Klare hasn’t lined up with the starters on offense in spring practice, but that is no different from how other transfers have aligned in Spring practices with Ryan Day at the helm at Ohio State.
Considering his production at Purdue, Klare seems to be the most likely of the Buckeyes’ tight ends — a group that includes graduate tight end Will Kacmarek and redshirt sophomore Jelani Thurman among many others — to be the team’s starter.
Klare is the first of six transfers, including former Minnesota offensive tackle Phillip Daniels, former West Virginia running back CJ Donaldson Jr., former Idaho State defensive end Logan George, former Duquesne linebacker Ty Howard and former Rice offensive tackle Ethan Onianwa.
