Former Ohio State guard Mike Conley Jr. has agreed to sign a one-year deal with the Boston Celtics, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. Conley will become just the 14th player in NBA history to reach 20 seasons.
Conley joins a Celtics squad that has been a power in the Eastern Conference of late, claiming the NBA championship in 2023-24 and reaching the conference semifinals in 2024-25 before falling in the first round in 2025-26.
He adds to Boston’s guard rotation, which includes Ron Harper Jr., Payton Pritchard, Derrick White, Hugo Gonzalez, Baylor Scheierman, and 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown.
A product of Indianapolis Lawrence North High School, Conley played just one season for the Buckeyes in 2006-07, but made a tremendous impact. The 6-1, 175-pound point guard averaged 11.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 2.2 steals per game, while shooting 51.8 percent from the floor.
Conley also helped lead Ohio State to a national championship game appearance alongside former Ohio State center and 2007 NBA No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden, where the Buckeyes fell to Florida 84-75. He was also named to the All-Tournament Team, while securing First-Team All-Big Ten and Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors.
Conley was selected fourth overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2007 NBA Draft and spent the first 12 seasons of his career in Memphis from 2007-19. He later played three-and-a-half seasons with the Utah Jazz from 2019-23 before being traded midway through the 2022-23 campaign to the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he spent his next three-and-a-half seasons from 2023-26.
He was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2013, earned his first and only All-Star appearance in 2021 and has four NBA Sportsmanship Awards, the most in league history.
