Former Ohio State safeties coach Perry Eliano, who parted ways with the Buckeyes over the offseason when his contract expired, found a new job with Toledo as the cornerbacks coach according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.
Eliano coached the safeties at Ohio State for two seasons beginning in 2022, coaching a secondary that allowed 200.5 passing yards per game that season.
Before Ohio State, Eliano made stops at Stephen F. Austin (2001-02), Central Arkansas (2003-04, 2006-10), Sam Houston (2005), UTSA (2011-15), Bowling Green (2016-17), New Mexico (2018-19) and Cincinnati (2020-21), and now he will return to the Mid-American conference to coach the Rockets.
Eliano worked closely with defensive coordinator Jim Knowles at Ohio State during his two seasons in what Knowles calls a “safety-driven defense” which utilizes three safeties on the field and was part of helping the defense get to first in the nation in 2023 with just 145.9 passing yards allowed per game.
Since Eliano’s departure, the Buckeyes have hired Matt Guerrieri as the new safeties coach from Indiana.
