Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel was nominated for Ohio’s lieutenant governor position by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Feb. 10.
During a press conference on Feb. 10, DeWine announced his nomination for Tressel, who would replace former Lt. Gov. Jon Husted if his nomination is approved by the Ohio Senate and Ohio House. Husted himself left his position to fill a senate seat vacated by Vice President J.D. Vance.
“He has the requisite skill sets, he has the criteria that I outlined. He knows Ohio,” DeWine said. “Jim Tressel, I trust his judgment. He is a born leader.”
From 2001-2010, Tressel helped lead the Buckeyes to a national championship win in 2001 and three total appearances. Tressel finished his ten-year career with the Buckeyes with a 106-23 overall record and a 63-15 Big Ten record.
Following his time with Ohio State, Tressel progressed into an administrative career and ultimately became the president of Youngstown State. Tressel held his position for almost nine years before retiring in early 2023.
At 72 years old, Tressel could be a candidate to be Ohio’s governor in 2026 after DeWine must retire due to term limits. DeWine said he and Tressel had not discussed whether or not the former Buckeye coach would run for the governor position in 2026.
