Three days removed from pulling off a stunning 13-10 upset win over Ohio State, Michigan is making a change to its coaching staff. The Wolverines fired offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell on Tuesday.
Campbell joined the Michigan coaching staff in 2022 as an offensive analyst before being promoted to quarterbacks coach in January 2023, and offensive coordinator in February 2024.
The Wolverines lost plenty of talent on the offensive side of the ball from their 2023 national championship-winning team, but in 2024 their offense was among the worst in the Big Ten.
Under Campbell’s leadership, Michigan scored 22.2 points per game, which ranks 112 out of 134 FBS teams, and averaged 294.3 yards per game which ranks 129 out of 134 FBS teams.
“After a thorough assessment of our offense, I made the decision to relieve Kirk Campbell of his duties and move in a different direction,” Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore announced in a press release. “This was a decision that I felt was in the best interest of our football program. I want to thank Kirk for his hard work and dedication to the university, Michigan Football and our student-athletes. I wish him well in his future coaching endeavors.”
Tight ends coach Steve Casula was named the team’s interim offensive coordinator, and will likely hold that position through postseason play, where the Wolverines seem headed to a bowl game after finishing the regular season 7-5.
