Former Ohio State golfer Neal Shipley earned low-amateur honors at the U.S. Open this weekend, making it the second time this year already after doing so at The Masters earlier.
He did so by beating out Luke Clanton of Florida State in the final round on Sunday. Both were at 4-over par going into the day and Shipley finished with a final score of 6-over while Clanton was 8-over.
The challenging Pinehurst No. 2 course served as a tough match for all golfers in the tournament over the weekend, but Shipley was able to earn low amateur honors again, joining just six others who have done so in The Masters and the U.S. Open in the same year, including Ohio State alum Jack Nicklaus who did it in 1960 and Phil Mickelson in 1991.
Shipley is now set to turn pro next week by joining PGA Tour Americas, playing his first tournament as a professional in Victoria, British Columbia.
Former Buckeye Maxwell Moldovan also played in the tournament, his first as a professional, but he missed the cut with a score of 14-over par through 36 holes on Thursday and Friday. He wasn’t the only one to struggle with the course, though as there were 12 golfers to be cut who finished at that score or worse.
