Ohio State has added former Buckeye safety Nate Ebner to its coaching staff as a special teams quality control coach.

The former walk-on went on to play for 10 seasons in the NFL, eight of those with the New England Patriots and his last two with the New York Giants. He joins his former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia on staff with the Buckeyes.

As a player with the Buckeyes, Ebner played in 36 games and had 30 tackles and one sack on his way to being the No. 197 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

But now he is returning to Columbus as a coach and head coach Ryan Day said that he believed Ebner’s experience as a Buckeye and his NFL experience will be very valuable to the team.

“This is a guy who was really self-made and turned out to have a great career in the NFL,” Day said. “He was a big part of special teams. He can have an impact on the safety room. He can have an impact on special teams. He’s somebody that’s now trying to make the transition from player to coach, so it’s great to have him around.”
