Ohio State continues to show off its academic excellence for the 2023-24 school year, with the conference announcing Tuesday that the Buckeyes have a conference-leading 220 student-athletes named as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars. The total is the second-most in school history behind only the 232 recognized in 2020-21, while it is also the third year in a row Ohio State has led the conference in Big Ten Distinguished Scholars.
In order to be tabbed as a distinguished scholar, student-athletes must have earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in the previous academic year, been enrolled full-time at the institution for the entire previous academic year and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better, excluding summer grades.
48 Ohio State student-athletes achieved this feat while earning a perfect 4.0 GPA in 2023-24, a group that is headlined by Riley Brengman, Jenna Buglioni, Jenifer Gardiner, Hadley Hartmetz, Raygan Kirk and Quin Kuntz of the national championship-winning women’s hockey team, Madison Greene, Riki Harris, Emma Shumate and Taylor Thierry of the women’s basketball team, left-handed baseball pitcher Jalen Jones and women’s volleyball player Emily Londot.
The full list of Ohio State Big Ten Distinguished Scholars, which also includes players such men’s basketball forward Jamison Battle, center Carson Hinzman, offensive lineman Donovan Jackson, former wide receiver Xavier Johnson and linebacker Cody Simon, among others, can be viewed here.
This caps off a strong academic season for Ohio State athletics. Earlier this month, 264 Buckeyes from spring and at-large sports were named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team, joining the 124 who earned the honor from the winter sports. 811 Buckeyes also landed on the Ohio State Scholar-Athlete list, while 203 current and former student-athletes received degrees at spring commencement on May 5.
