The Big Ten and the Chicago Cubs announced Thursday that it plans to host a pair of college hockey doubleheaders at Wrigley Field in January 2025, a series of games that will include both the Ohio State men’s and women’s hockey teams.
The event, called The Frozen Confines, will feature three Big Ten’s hockey games and a Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) women’s game from Jan. 3-4, 2025, each of which will air on Big Ten Network.
The Ohio State men’s team will play in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field on Jan. 3 against Michigan, with the game either occurring at 5 p.m. or 8:30. That day will also feature a game between Penn State and Notre Dame. The Buckeyes’ matchup with the Wolverines will be the fifth outdoor game for the program in the modern era, with the other games occurring at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisc. in 2006, Progressive Field in Cleveland in 2012, Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis in 2014 and Cleveland Browns Stadium in 2023.
The reigning national champion women’s team will take the ice the next day on Jan. 4 against Wisconsin at either 5:30 or 9 p.m. This will be the second of a weekend series between the two programs, with the first game taking place on Jan. 2 in Madison, Wisc., replacing the previous scheduled series in February.
Nadine Muzerall’s team has played in one outdoor game before, facing off against Minnesota during 2020’s Hockey Day Minnesota.
Wrigley Field will be a popular destination for Ohio State athletics this upcoming season, as the Buckeye football team will also play in the iconic stadium against Northwestern on Nov. 16.
