Ohio State Quarterback Justin Fields Named Golden Arm Finalist
Ohio State junior quarterback Justin Fields was named as one of five finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which is awarded to the top upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with their class.
Fields was nominated along with Notre Dame’s Ian Book, Alabama’s Mac Jones, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Florida’s Kyle Trask.
The Ohio State signal-caller has been impressive thus far, completing 78.1 percent of his passes for 1,407 yards and 15 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions.
But those numbers all pale in comparison to the other four quarterbacks nominated, who have all thrown for at least 2,382 yards. But Fields has just five games under his belt compared to eight games by Lawrence and 10 by Book, Jones and Trask.
When looking at efficiency numbers, Fields’ 196.1 passer rating trails only Jones (203.9) while leading all the quarterbacks, both in this award and in all of the Football Bowl Subdivision, with his completion percentage.
On a pure output basis, Trask has an advantage, with his 3,717 passing yards leading all FBS quarterbacks by over 350 yards and his 40 passing touchdowns leading all other signal-callers by 10.
If Fields were to win the award, which will be announced Monday, he would become the first in program history.
