Ohio State wide receiver Quincy Porter became the first freshman and the sixth Buckeye of the 2025 season to lose his black stripe, doing so after the team’s Student Appreciation Day practice on Saturday.
Porter loses the stripe just 11 practices into his Ohio State career. He was the Buckeyes’ lone five-star wide receiver pledge of the 2025 recruiting class, coming into the program as the nation’s fifth-best wideout and 23rd-best overall player in the class out of Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic.
Porter, who racked up an impressive 133 receptions for 2,624 yards and 38 touchdowns across his three seasons at Bergen Catholic, has lived up to his five-star name so far in spring camp. He was listed by offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Brian Hartline as one of the young wideouts who have bought into the culture so far this season, and he was one of the top offensive performers during Student Appreciation Day according to the contingent of media at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.
Porter will likely begin the season towards the end of the wide receiver depth chart with starters Jeremiah Smith, Carnell Tate and Brandon Inniss as well as second-year reserve Mylan Graham all leading the room. But based on his early black stripe removal, he could end up being the first freshman used by Hartline off the bench if he continues to ascend.
Porter is the first member of Ohio State’s 2025 freshman class to have his black stripe removed and the sixth player overall to lose the distinction, joining cornerback Miles Lockhart (March 29), tight end Max Klare (March 31), defensive linemen Dominic Kriks (April 1) and Eric Mensah (April 3) and offensive linemen Simon Lorentz (April 1).
