Ohio State Wideout Jeremiah Smith Named FWAA Freshman All-American

Ohio State true freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith continued to rack up the national postseason awards on Tuesday when he was named a freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America. Smith is Ohio State’s 12th freshman to earn this honor since it was created in 2001.

Smith’s inclusion on the list is just one of several honors given to the freshman this season. He was named in December as the Big Ten’s Richter-Howard Wide Receiver of the Year and Freshman of the Year, making him the second player ever to hold both titles. He was also named a first-team All-American by USA Today while also taking home first-team All-Big Ten honors.

These accolades come due to Smith turning in what is one of the more impressive freshman seasons by an Ohio State and Big Ten player in recent memory. The 2024 consensus No. 1 prospect smashed each of Chris Carter’s Ohio State freshman single season records in the regular season by hauling in 57 catches for 934 yards and 10 touchdowns, and he only added to his already eye-opening legacy in the College Football Playoff by erupting for 290 yards and four touchdowns in Ohio State’s first two wins against Tennessee on Dec. 21 and Oregon on Jan. 1.

Those stats, along with his mere one catch for 3 yards against Texas, puts him at 71 receptions, 1,227 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns, each of which are the most by a freshman wideout in the nation. His 14 touchdowns are tied for second-most in single-season program history with David Boston (1997).
