This week, Ohio State senior golfer Maxwell Moldovan got a great piece of news.
For the second time in his young golfing career, Moldovan had qualified for the U.S. Open and will compete in the major starting Thursday at the Los Angeles Country Club.
Moldovan shot rounds of 65 and 68 June 5 at the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier in Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ohio. With a score of seven under par, Moldovan was tied with two other golfers for the final two qualifying spots. He’d need to finish top two in a three-man playoff.
It took eight holes, but Moldovan lost, becoming the last golfer eliminated from qualifying. But it also put him first on the list of alternates from Springfield, and third on the list nationally.
Sunday, Moldovan got the call that they’d made it to his spot on the alternate list.
Moldovan also competed in last year’s U.S. Open, his first appearance, and shot a combined +7 the first two rounds to finish a mere four strokes back of the cutline. This year’s event will take place at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
