Ohio State’s Tre Leclaire, Ryan Terefenko Named To Tewaaraton Award Watch List For Nation’s Top Player

Seniors Tre Leclaire and Ryan Terefenko of the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team were named to the 2020 Tewaaraton Award Men’s Watch List.

The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the nation. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.

Leclaire and Terefenko both return on the watch list, having also earned the honor last season when Terefenko went on to be one of 25 Tewaaraton Award nominees for 2019. Leclaire makes his third straight appearance on the watch list. 

Leclaire, who is a native of Surry, British Columbia, already has 13 goals in the first four games of the season to push his career total to 122, which ranks fourth in program history behind Terry Gilmore (123 from 1976-79), Joel Dalgarno (126 from 2006-09), and Logan Schuss (147 from 2010-13). He needs 26 goals to pass Schuss for No. 1 on the all-time list.

One of the top scorers in the country, Leclaire began the 2020 season by tying his career high with six goals in a 23-9 victory against Detroit Mercy. He is No. 28 in the nation in goals per game (3.25) and tied for No. 42 in points per game (4.25).

Terefenko is a three-time All-American who earned second-team honors as a defensive midfielder last season. The Sinking Spring, Pa., native has three assists in 2020 as well as a team-high 15 ground balls. His play has also contributed to Ohio State’s .918 clearing percentage through four games, which is fourth best in the country.

A 49-game veteran, Terefenko is the Buckeyes’ active career leader in ground balls (124) and has also tallied 14 goals and 18 assists for 32 points with 13 caused turnovers.

Terefenko and Leclaire, who are seeking to become the first four-time All-Americans in program history, will lead the No. 14 Buckeyes (3-1) against Cornell on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Ohio Stadium.
