Field Hockey Remains Unbeaten With Overtime Win Over Louisville
Make it nine in a row for the No. 4 Ohio State field hockey team.
The Buckeyes (9-0, 1-0 Big Ten) only needed three minutes and thirteen seconds of overtime play to notch a game-winning goal against No. 13 Louisville to continue their unbeaten season Sunday of the stick of graduate forward Makenna Webster.
Neither team found the back of the cage through the first two quarters but exploded for a combined three goals in the third quarter with Louisville junior midfielder Izzy Bianco starting off the party at 36:48.
The next three goals were all scored by the Buckeyes, as junior back Katie Fichtner tallied goal No. 1 at 40:58 and Webster lifted Ohio State to a 2-1 lead at 44:49.
Ohio State did not skip a beat starting off the final quarter of regulation, extending the lead to 3-1 at 48:15 by the twig of junior forward Lindsey Roberts for her fifth goal of the campaign.
The Cardinals (5-5, 1-1 ACC) mounted a furious fourth-quarter comeback, adding goals by junior forward Rylie Wollerton and sophomore forward Chloe Plumb before Webster gave the game its curtain call at 63:13 in overtime, bringing her goal total to 10 on the season and giving Ohio State its ninth win in a row to start the season, the team’s best start ever.
No. 11 Women’s Soccer Beats Michigan in Ann Arbor
Similar to their Sept. 22 against Northwestern, the Buckeyes needed two second-half goals to pick up their eighth win of the season on Sunday.
Ohio State (8-1-3, 3-0-2 Big Ten) trailed 1-0 early in the first half as Wolverine (2-9-1, 1-4-0 Big Ten) defender Taylor Brennan found the back of the net at the 12:44 mark. That goal was followed by nearly 50 minutes of scoreless action before OSU sophomore forward Amanda Schlueter tallied the equalizer for Ohio State at 61:15. Senior forward Kailyn Dudukovich added her 11th goal of the season at 85:44 to give Ohio State a 2-1 advantage and their fourth win in six games.
Dudukovich and Schlueter have been the mainstays for Ohio State offensively this season, with Dudukovich boasting 23 points (11 goals, one assist) and Schlueter just behind at 21 points (eight goals, five assists). Furthermore, the fearsome forwards have combined for 10 goals in the previous six games.
Junior netminder Molly Pritchard saved two shots for the Buckeyes en route to the victory.
With the win, Ohio State head coach Lori Walker-Hock sits at 299 wins at Ohio State and could punch her ticket to win No. 300 against Maryland on Friday in Columbus.
Women’s Ice Hockey Rights Its Wrongs Against Bemidji State
After a nightmarish opening weekend that played host to a Minnesota Duluth sweep over Ohio State, the No. 5 Buckeyes turned the tide against Bemidji State, winning 8-2 Friday and 3-0 Saturday.
Ohio State (2-2-0, 2-2-0 WCHA) shellshocked the Beavers early Friday, sending in five first-period goals, including two from Webster as she took her field hockey prowess to the ice.
Sophomore forward Jocelyn Amos made it a 6-0 Ohio State advantage at 2:24 in the second period before a short-handed goal by sophomore forward Hailey Armstrong gave the Beavers their first goal of the day at 10:29.
Special teams galore, freshman forward Jordyn Petrie tallied a power-play goal for the Buckeyes to bring the score to 7-1 heading into the final period.
Petrie tallied another goal in the third to pave the way for Ohio State’s first victory of the year.
Graduate goaltender Amanda Thiele saved eight shots in the winning effort, with Thiele picking up her first win since a 12-1 trouncing of St. Thomas on Feb. 16.
Saturday’s action saw a much quieter approach for the Buckeyes, as neither team scored in the opening frame. A second-period goal at 14:46 by sophomore forward Joy Dunne, her first of the year, lifted Ohio State to a lead it would not relinquish. Petrie added her third goal of the weekend at 1:55 in the third period before freshman forward Josie St. Martin made her Buckeye debut on the scoresheet at 16:00.
Junior goaltender and Minnesota Duluth transfer Hailey MacLeod saved 15 shots in the shutout victory.
Ohio State will head to the Empire State next to take on St. Lawrence in Canton, New York this coming Friday and Saturday in a non-conference series.
