Men’s Soccer Take Down Huskies 3-1 In Big Ten Tournament
For the second time this season, Ohio State got the best of Washington. But this time, it mattered just a bit more.
The top-seeded Buckeyes beat No. 4 seed Washington 3-1 in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament on Sunday, putting Ohio State one game away from its first conference tournament championship since 2009.
Neither team tallied a score nor a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes. In the 59th minute, Ohio State senior midfielder Parker Grinstead scored on a penalty kick and one minute of game time later, found the back of the net again to lift the Buckeyes to a 2-0 lead.
Buckeye graduate defender Siggi Magnusson scored at 70:51 to make it 3-0 before an own goal by Ohio State gave Washington its lone score of the day.
Next up, Ohio State welcomes in Michigan at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus on Sunday, with the winner being crowned the Big Ten tournament champion and getting an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
Field Hockey Disappoints In Opening Round Of Big Ten Tournament, Season Ends
After the hottest start in program history and climbing as high as No. 3 in the NFHCA poll, Ohio State field hockey fell to Rutgers 2-1 in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament on Thursday, marking the third loss in four games for the Buckeyes.
Fifth-seeded Ohio State never led against the fourth-seeded Scarlet Knights, falling into a 2-0 hole early in the third quarter after two goals by graduate forward Kara Heck.
Ohio State (14-5, 4-4 Big Ten) cut into Rutgers’ lead with a tally from graduate forward Makenna Webster at 33:44, but the goal proved to be futile as the Scarlet Knights (8-9, 4-4 Big Ten) saved the remaining four shots attempted by the Buckeyes.
With the loss, the Buckeyes did not qualify for the NCAA tournament, missing out on an at-large bid. The 14 wins tallied this season tied for sixth in program history and the 9-0 start was the best start in Ohio State history.
Women’s Soccer To Take On James Madison To Open NCAA Tournament
After a 1-0 loss in extra time to top-seeded USC in the Big Ten tournament, Ohio State women’s soccer has a chance at redemption in the NCAAs.
The Buckeyes will carry the No. 3 seed in the opening round of the tournament, hosting unseeded James Madison on Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
Ohio State (12-5-3, 6-3-2) put together a strong defensive season, limiting teams to just 0.85 goals per game and totaling seven shutouts on the year. The forward tandem of senior Kailyn Dudukovich and sophomore Amanda Schlueter will continue to shoulder the offensive load for the Buckeyes, as the two combined for 62 points (25 G, 12 A).
James Madison (12-3-5, 8-0-2 Sun Belt) received an automatic bid into postseason play, winning the Sun Belt tournament championship 3-2 over Texas State – the first crown in program history for the Dukes.
Freshman forward Ginny Lackey has led the way for James Madison so far, notching 33 points (12 G, 9 A) in 15 games started.
The Dukes make the tournament for the 13th time in program history. The Buckeyes appear for the 18th time.
Women’s Volleyball Goes .500 Over Weekend
In a bit of a renaissance as of late, Ohio State women’s volleyball has won three out of its last four contests, defeating Michigan in five sets on Friday before falling to Illinois in straight-sets on Saturday.
The Buckeyes captured the first set 25-20 against the Wolverines before falling 25-21 in set No. 2. The third set was a back-and-forth affair with a 15-15 tie before Ohio State closed the period out with a 10-5 run.
Michigan (16-9, 6-8 Big Ten) responded with another tight victory, a 25-21 fourth set decision before the Buckeyes closed out the fifth set with a 15-7 win.
Freshman outside hitter Emmi Sellman led the Buckeyes with 18 kills while graduate outside hitter Emily Londot continued her excellent season with 15 kills of her own.
On Saturday, Ohio State never led in the opening set, trailing by as much as 10 midway through the first set before a convincing 25-18 victory for the Fighting Illini (17-7, 9-5 Big Ten).
Late in the second set, the Buckeyes made it a 24-24 tie off of a kill from sophomore middle back Eloise Brandewie. However, the Illini stormed back on a 3-1 run to close out the set.
A 25-20 decision in the third set marked the fourth instance this season Ohio State (11-13, 4-10 Big Ten) lost in a sweep.
The Buckeyes return to Columbus for the start of a four-match home stand, beginning with hosting Maryland on Friday at 7 p.m.
