Men’s Tennis Wins B1G Tournament
After going undefeated in the Big Ten during the regular season, Ohio State won the conference tournament for the second straight year. It’s the 17th time the program has won the tournament.
The Buckeyes run started with Penn State on Friday, beating them 4-0 before beating Nebraska 4-1 on Saturday and taking down Michigan 4-1 on Sunday.
In the championship match, Ohio State started off by winning the doubles point with the teams of Andrew Lutschaunig and Justin Boulais along with Cannon Kingsley and Jack Anthrop each won, 6-3 and 6-1, respectively.
Michigan earned its only point from No. 19 Gavin Young beating Boulais in singles, but Kingsley, Anthrop and JJ Tracy each won their match in just two sets to clinch the conference title for the Buckeyes.
Next up is the NCAA regional from May 3-5 before the super regional takes place May 10-11. The NCAA team championship will be May 16-19 and NCAA singles and doubles championships will be May 20-26.
Women’s Tennis Loses In B1G Finals
The women’s tennis team also made it to the conference championship over the weekend, ultimately losing to Michigan 4-2. They beat Penn State on Friday 4-1 and Northwestern in the semifinals on Saturday 4-1 to get to the title match. It was the fourth year the Buckeyes and Wolverines faced off in the championship.
Michigan took the doubles point to start the match winning two of three. Irina Cantos Siemers and freshman Luciana Perry teamed up to beat the No. 8 doubles team of Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller, but the Wolverines took the other two.
Perry tied the match up at one when she won her singles match. Michigan won the next two matches before Shelly Bereznyak won her singles match to earn the Buckeyes their second point. But when Sydni Ratliff dropped her match to Julia Fliegner, the Wolverines had the championship win clinched and Cantos Siemers match was abandoned.
The NCAA tournament field will be announced Monday at 6:30 p.m., and the Buckeyes are ranked No. 12 nationally so they will very likely hear their name called during the selection show.
