Ohio State co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Brian Hartline is reportedly in the mix for the West Virginia head coaching job. According to a report from Chris Anderson of 247 Sports on Wednesday, Hartline interviewed for the position and was one of a handful of candidates to make the in-person stage.
Hartline has been Ohio State’s wide receivers coach since 2018 and has coached the likes of Marvin Harrison Jr., Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Garrett Wilson, all of whom went on to be first-round selections in the NFL draft. Hartline has been known as one of the best recruiters in the country, with freshman receiver and former No.1 overall recruit in the 2024 class, Jeremiah Smith representing perhaps his biggest recruiting win.
The Buckeyes didn’t bring in a five-star recruit at receiver in their 2025 class, but in the 2026 class Hartline and the Buckeyes already have a commitment from the No. 1-ranked receiver Chris Henry Jr.
Hartline was also Ohio State’s offensive coordinator in 2023 and this year he is the co-offensive coordinator, now with current offensive coordinator Chip Kelly on the staff.
If Hartline becomes the next head coach at West Virginia he will be tasked with taking over for former head coach Neal Brown. Brown finished his six-year tenure as the leader of the Mountaineers with a 37-35 record. Brown was ultimately fired after West Virginia went 6-6 in 2024.
