Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said Tuesday that junior quarterback Kyle McCord will be the Buckeyes’ full-time starter under center for the rest of the season.
“I think it gives Kyle peace of mind that he is the starter,” Day said. “I think it’s good for the team to have that distinction that Kyle is the starter.”
Day said he and the staff arrived at the decision after reviewing film from Ohio State’s first two games of the season, and came to the conclusion that McCord – who started both games, as well as a contest in 2021 during his true freshman season – had displayed more consistency at the position.
“I thought he was much more poised in this game than the first one,” Day said.
Through the first two games, McCord completed 64.2 percent (34 of 53) of his passes for 497 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. McCord had previously been competing with redshirt freshman Devin Brown, who Day said the team is still hoping to involve this season as a backup.
“We’d like to get him out there and play,” Day said. “Depends on the opponent(and) the strategy.”
