Sammy Sasso is making his return to the mat on Thursday as he is set to compete at 165 pounds in the Buckeyes first dual meet of the season.
Sasso is returning after he had to sit out the entire 2023-24 season after being shot in a carjacking over the offseason that required an emergency surgery to repair his colon and left him with lasting nerve damage that forced him to relearn how to walk.
When Chattanooga comes to Columbus, Sasso will have his first chance to wrestle competitively since he lost in the NCAA title match at 149 pounds to finish the 2022-23 season.
The plan last season was initially to move Sasso up to the 157-pound weight class, but now he will be No. 6 Ohio State’s representative at 165 pounds.
He will be joined in the Buckeyes lineup by Brendan McCrone (125 pounds), Nic Bouzakis (133), Jesse Mendez (141), Dylan D’Emilio (149), Paddy Gallagher (157), Bryce Hepner (174), Ryder Rogotzke (184), Luke Geog (197) and Nick Feldman (Heavyweight).
