Just one day after Seth McLaughlin was ruled out for the season with a torn Achilles, he was named a semifinalist for the Outland Trophy, which is awarded to the best interior lineman in the country.
The Football Writers Association of America listed seven semifinalists, of which McLaughlin was he only center on the list, showing off the type of season the Alabama transfer was having his first year in Columbus.
He is also a finalist for the Campbell Trophy, the nation’s top scholar-athlete award and a top candidate for the Rimington Trophy, which is awarded to the best center in the country each year.
With McLaughlin at center, the offensive line was having a resurgent season and was named a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award as well, in an offense that is 12th in scoring offense and 17th in total offense.
McLaughlin was also named a first-team midseason All-American by six different organizations weeks ago.
Ryan Day said on Wednesday night that with McLaughlin out, Carson Hinzman — who has started the past two games at left guard — will slide back to center, where he started all of the 2023 regular season, and Austin Siereveld will be at left guard against No. 5 Indiana on Saturday.
