Transfer Offensive Lineman Josh Simmons Sheds Second Black Stripe Of Fall Camp

Ohio State officially welcomed another transfer offensive lineman to the team on Thursday, shedding the black stripe of junior transfer Josh “Jimmy” Simmons after practice.

Simmons, a San Diego native, joined the Buckeyes’ program in June of 2023 after spending the past two seasons at San Diego State. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Simmons anchored the Brady Hoke-led Aztecs at right tackle for the entire 2022 season, playing 799 snaps and starting all 13 games as a redshirt freshman. Simmons entered the collegiate ranks as a consensus four-star prospect in 2021, and was ranked as the nation’s 25th-best interior offensive lineman.

Now an official member of the Buckeyes, Simmons will spend the rest of fall camp vying for a starting role on the Buckeyes’ revamped offensive line. Head coach Ryan Day expressed confidence in the San Diego State transfer while speaking with the media at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, affirming that he remains in consideration to start for the Buckeyes up front.

“I can tell you we’re very excited about Jimmy Simmons,” Day said. He’s off to a great start.”

Simmons became the second transfer offensive lineman to shed their black stripe after practice on Thursday, joining Louisiana-Monroe transfer Victor Cutler Jr. The former Aztec is also the 11th Buckeye to earn the honor in 2023, a list that includes offensive linemen George Fitzpatrick, Tegra Tshabola and Quinton Burke, cornerback Davison Igbinosum, quarterback Tristan Gebbia, running back Chase Brecht, safety Malik Hartford and tight end Jelani Thurman.
