The Big Ten Conference Council of Presidents and Chancellors unanimously approved a five-year extension for Commissioner Tony Petitti, the conference announced on Wednesday. Petitti’s new extension will push his contract through June 2033.
“Tony has provided outstanding vision for the Conference through extremely turbulent times,” said Pamela Whitten, Indiana president and chair of the Big Ten’s Council of Presidents and Chancellors. “We’re thankful for his leadership and appreciate his spirit of innovation and collaboration as we continue to navigate the changing landscape of college sports.”
Petitti took the reins of the Big Ten on April 11, 2023, after former commissioner Kevin Warren left to become the president and CEO of the Chicago Bears.
Since then, Petitti has overseen the Big Ten’s expansion from 14 to 18 teams in 2024 while helping guide the conference through a rapidly changing college football landscape, including the transfer portal, NIL and playoff expansion.
During his tenure, the conference has won three consecutive football national championships with Michigan in 2024, Ohio State in 2025 and Indiana in 2026.
Pettiti most recently led the effort to pass a rule banning former NFL or professional football players from returning to college football on Tuesday.
